These patients, who live too far from our Manhattan facility for daily visits, now make up more than half of CHR's consultations. A significant portion of these patients come from outside the United States for our specialized treatment expertise.
The logistics for long-distance patients differ significantly from those for local patients. Despite these differences, CHR ensures that all patients receive the same high-quality fertility treatments, reporting every IVF cycle to national registries at the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART). While treatment protocols remain consistent, we coordinate care to minimize the need for travel. Many long-distance patients may come to CHR for a second opinion consultation, either online or in-person, and then continue their treatment locally. How Do Fertility Treatments for Long-Distance Patients Work?
For many long-distance patients, receiving fertility treatments at the Center for Human Reproduction can be logistically challenging and costly. To address this, CHR minimizes the need for frequent visits by conducting initial consultations via phone or video. If further diagnostic evaluations are required, CHR's clinical coordinators arrange for tests to be performed at a local IVF center near the patient's home. CHR collaborates with numerous IVF centers worldwide, ensuring seamless coordination and care under CHR's protocols and supervision. This means all preliminary steps are handled locally, and the patient only needs to visit our New York, NY office once for a few short days.
The duration of our patients' stay depends on the type of IVF cycle. A standard IVF cycle typically requires about four days while cycles involving closer monitoring or embryo culturing may extend to 5 – 6 days. For egg donation cycles, the stay is often just 1 – 2 days. Throughout the treatment process, one of our clinical coordinators and physicians will offer support from the first consultation until the completion of treatment plans, ensuring continuity of care.
We prioritize our patients' comfort and convenience, ensuring that their accommodation and language needs are met. If you inform us of your arrival in advance, we can arrange hotel accommodations near our facility and provide language assistance during your visits with our physicians. In addition to English, our physicians and staff speak Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese), Russian, Polish, Italian, Spanish, Hungarian, Georgian, Romanian, Japanese, Tagalog, German, and Hebrew. For other languages, we can arrange interpretation and translation services as needed.
What Should Long-Distance Fertility Patients Consider?
For long-distance patients, especially those overseas, accessing the right fertility medications can be challenging due to availability issues. While similar drugs might be available locally, it is crucial for CHR long-distance patients to receive the same treatment as local patients, including the exact medications. Our clinical coordinators work diligently to ensure that all long-distance patients have access to the necessary medications to match the standards of care provided at our New York City facility.
The cost structure for long-distance treatment at CHR is straightforward: patients are only charged for services provided by CHR staff with local IVF centers billing for their services separately. Finding suitable local IVF centers is essential, though it can be challenging in rural areas of developed countries and major urban centers in less developed countries. In such cases, patients might need to come to NYC for the entire IVF cycle, which can be condensed to 2 – 3 weeks. While CHR prefers to provide all services at our facility, we understand the need to minimize travel time without compromising treatment outcomes.
